| AQUATIC THERAPY The pool is used as a medium to treat patients with many areas of difficulty. Our physical and occupational therapists treat children on a one on one basis in this setting. Each program is tailored to the child's individual needs. Children usually see the pool as a fun environment. Being in the water decreases the effects of gravity making many activities which involve balance and coordination more attainable for the child. The water in the pool is kept warm so that stretching of muscles is more easily facilitated. The water also provides resistance which can be used to strengthen muscles. The pool provides all around sensory input which facilitates learning of skills. The following benefits are noted to occur in the pool, and carry over to the child's everyday life on land: Increased range of motion Increased strength Improved coordination of both sides of the body Improved balance Improved motor planning Increased independence and function Increased self esteem Improved sensory processing Children or adults with the following diagnoses/challenges can benefit from aquatic therapy: Cerebral Palsy Down's Syndrome Low muscle tone Muscular Dystrophy Neurological disorders Perceptual difficulties Poor balance Coordination deficits Sensory Integration Dysfunction |
