Pediatric Physical Therapy Pediatric physical therapists are trained to assess the motor development of children. They have the expertise to determine the appropriate treatment for physical limitations or functional impairments. They may use exercise in the form of play and/or use modalities as treatment techniques. Their goals may include improving a child's functional skills, and preventing or limiting disability in a variety of developmental areas. They may also modify the environment based on the child's physical and cognitive challenges. Physical therapists look at the whole person and find those problem areas that are causing the child not to live up to their fullest potential. Play is the media most often used in the physical therapist's treatment of children. It is a highly motivating and natural media used by all children. Education and involvement of the family is a primary consideration and is critical to success. The educational background of a pediatric physical therapist includes extensive course work in anatomy, neurology, physiology, psychology, and child development. |
